Peniche, “capital of the wave”

The council of Peniche is known by it’s beautiful coast, which provides moments of beauty with the practice of the surf and body-board. Many national and international names of those modalities come to Peniche every year.

For that reason, Peniche is known internationally by the exceptional conditions for the practice of nautical sports. The presence of the sea makes Peniche being called as the “capital of the wave”.

Peniche was a place of some important national and international historical events, with a long and rich history, having been successively occupied buy people who lived from the fishing and agriculture. The craftmanship is present in day by day of the council.

About the historical patrimony, Peniche has the Fortress of Peniche, Fortress of “São João Baptista”, Fortress of “Consolação”, “Touril”, Fountain of “Rosário” and Grotto of “Furninha”.

The religious patrimony is constituted by São Pedro's Church, the most imposing church of the council, church of the Mercy, Sanctuary of “Nossa Senhora dos Remédios”, church of São Leonardo and the church of “Nossa Senhora da Conceição”.

Torres Vedras, Bombarral, Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha have an enormous ceramic tradition, although it has been in the old village of Óbidos that the magnificent artist of the 17th century, Josefa d’Óbidos, created a workshop of ceramic art. In Caldas da Rainha the famous artist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro created the most known caricature ceramic. At the present days, besides the highest levels of industrial ceramic expression, Caldas da Rainha, still has the Knowledge of handwork the crockery in traditional ways.

In Peniche, the sea-city, the secular bobbin laces present themselves as a reference.

The richness of the coast connected with the biggest concentration of nursery- selfish in the country (Porto Barcas) allowed the confection of the most varied dishes of fish and other “sea fruits”, including the famous Sweet Lobster.
