Pombal, great names lived there
The council of Pombal is known by being a land of illustrious people. Example of that is “Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo”, the Marquis of Pombal statesman, one of the most controversial and charismatic person of the history of Portugal. In that council, the famous Marquis was born. Lately, he would write an important chapter of the history of the country, but the historical side of Pombal was not over.
The council has a vast cultural and historical patrimony, as the Tower of the Old Clock, Pillory of Louriçal, New Art House, Pillory of Pombal and of Redinha, Barn of the Marquis of Pombal or Barn of “Quinta de Gramela”, “Manuelino” Arch, and others.
The great pride of the municipal district is the Castle of Pombal that is the oldest memory of the city. It was ordered to build by Gualdim Pais. In the century XVI, started to be residence of the “alcaide-mor” and with the french invasions it was ruined. It is today one of the better preserved military fortresses of the country.
The power of the religion is also present in the council, with the church of the Convent of Louriçal, Small chapel of “Nossa Senhora da Guia”, Chapel of the Mercy of Louriçal, church of “Nossa Senhora da Conceição” or Mother church of “Redinha” and Mother church of “Nossa Senhora das Neves”.
In the summer, the “Osso da Baleia” beach is one of the favourite places of Pombal. There it is inevitable to meet the blue of the sea and the beauty of their landscapes.
The municipal district of Pombal is composed by the “freguesias” of Abiul, Albergaria dos Doze, Almagreira, Carnide, Carriço, Guia, Ilha, Louriçal, Mata Mourisca, Meirinhas, Pelariga, Pombal, Redinha, Santiago de Litém, São Simão de Litém, Vermoil e Vila Cã.
