Figueiro dos Vinhos, a flowery European village
Figueiro dos Vinhos is a council of Portugal with more than eight hundred years of history. With about 3.800 inhabitants, the town of Figueiró dos Vinhos has many old vestiges of human occupation, from the Age of the Final Bronze.
The place was declared "a flowery European village", in 1998. This municipal district is also known by its vast historical and religious patrimony.
São João Baptista's Church or Mother church of Figueiró dos Vinhos is one of the most visited points of the council. This structure is classified as National Monument.
But the attractions are also the Tower of the Chain, the Convent of “Nossa Senhora do Carmo”, the House of Malhoa, the “Casal de São João”, the fountain of the nuns, the Ruins of the “Antigas Ferrarias de Foz de Alge” and the São Simão's Small chapel.
Another slope to be explored is the environmental and the nature tourism. The council counts with several natural alternatives, as the Fluvial Beach “Fragas de São Simão”, the Fluvial Beach of “Aldeia Ana de Aviz” and the Fluvial Beach of Alge.
The craftsmanship is also part of the history of Figueiro dos Vinhos. For that, it was created a Permanent Center of Craftsmanship, with the intention of preserving the traditional art and also trying to promote the works of the artisans of the council. In that centre, it is possible to find several works as the basketwork, brickwork, painting and others.
But the “Figueiroense” culture goes far away. The council has several parties and pilgrimages. The biggest one begins in June 24, which is called the Parties of the Council, in honour of “São João Baptista”, the patron saint. This event has a lot of musical shows, cultural manifestations, sports and other popular activities.
In the days 26, 27 and July 28, it takes place the “São Pantaleão” annual fair, which keeps alive the tradition for long years. In the annual calendar, there are also the carnival party and the Figueiró dos Vihos’s festival, with a lot of music for everyone, especially for the young one. This summer festival is one of the most important of Portugal. The parties take place a little bit for the whole council, through the five “freguesias”: Aguda, Arega, Bairradas, Campelo e Figueiró dos Vinhos.

Regional flavors
Figueiro dos Vinhos has a great tradition about the convent candies. The rich candies in eggs and almond, as the sweet chestnuts, torch drops and cheeses of the sky, butter cookies, marriage “broinhas” complement the fame of the sponge-cake. The culture of the candies of the region still conserves today the original recipes left by the nuns that stayed in this council till the century XIX.
The waters of the Riverside of Alge and of the River Zêzere, that runs in the whole council, they can provide a great ingredient in the tables of the “Figueiroenses”. Fishes like the Achigã, Boga, Carp, Catfish and the Trouts, that allow varied gastronomic plates, are the most seducing in Figueiró dos Vinhos. The lamb and the kid goat are also part of the local gastronomy.
The production of the honey, in the Demarcated Area of the saw of Lousã, is still one of the biggest bets of the council.
