 An encounter with the history in Bombarral
On June 29, 1914, was officially born the council of Bombarral.
However, there are tracks of the human presence in the council from the prehistory. The New Cave, the “Lapa do Suão”, the Neolithic fortification of Columbeira and São Mamede's Castro are good examples.
Located in the district of Leiria, the council of Bombarral is about 75 kilometres of Lisbon and 20 of the Atlantic Ocean. Bombarral, Carvalhal, Pó, Roliça and Vale Covo are the five “freguesias” of the council, that, in 1808, was the place of the fight for the portuguese independence with the battle of Roliça. The Anglo-Portuguese army, commanded by the General Wellesley, future Duke of Wellington was the winner.
The village of Bombarral counts with about 5.500 inhabitants.
In this place, it is possible to appreciate the Palace of Gorjão, that houses the Municipal Museum of Bombarral, the Parochial Church of “Santíssimo Salvador do Mundo” and the Eduardo Brazão Theatre, they are all points of tourist interest.
In the “freguesia” of Carvalhal, you can also visit the famous Medieval Tower, the Small chapel of “Nossa Senhora do Socorro”, the Chapel of Sacred Sacramento, “Senhor Jesus e São Pedro” Parochial Church and the good-looking farm of Loridos.
In Roliça, the attention is at the Solar of Mello and Castro, São Lourenço's Chapel and the Chapel of “Senhor Jesus da Boa Hora”.
In the “freguesia” of Pó, the Chapel of Santa Catarina attracts the visitors.
In Vale Covo, the Church of Jesus's Sacred Heart comes as the favourite destiny of the religious persons.
Other attractions like the cave of Columbeira and of the “Lapa do Suão” are known as points of true interest in a scenery of nature everywhere.
Not less important, Castro of Columbeira is also one of the tourist pillars of that area.
Other grandiose aspects of the council of Bombarral are their farms, with emphasis on the farm of Granja, of Ramalheira, of the Cerejeiras, of Sanguinhal and Loridos.
But for those that prefer more agitated days, why not to use the swimming pool and the municipal sport pavilion, besides the practice of sport in Carvalhal and Bombarral and also the International kart race of the West, where the adrenaline will always be high.
For the ones that like to seize the night, two good suggestions are the “Coelhos Bar” and “Kontrast”, located in a council that has the good flavours of their candies and liqueurs, which sweeten the many visitors' dream.
