Alcobaça is certainly one of Portugal's greatest architectural masterpieces, the 12th century Cistercian monastery, “Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça” was one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well worth a visit.  Equally, the visit to the “Museu de Vinho” (wine museum) will not be a waste of time .... and gives you the chance to buy some of the local products! 

The town itself is pleasantly low-key and has shops bursting with local pottery.

Alcobaca has changed a lot in the last 2-3 years and is trying with success to turn to a very attractive touristy town.
